Yes. It's the first chord played. Doesn't sound so dissonant to the contemporary ear, does it?

Every fucking time there is a discussion of Wagner, some charlatan starts a poorly informed discussion about Nazism, instead of paying attention to this mind blowing music.

Nobody before Wagner created any music comparable to Tristan. This music came out of one man's imagination and know-how. There has not been any worthy composer since his time who does not owe him a debt of gratitude. And this is as good a rendition of this piece as we are ever likely to hear.

    what a performance!

Everyone hated Jews back then - ain't no thang. Great book, "Liberal Fascism," Jonah Goldberg. He dispells myths about fascism - today's liberal left actually has a LOT in common with the fascists and Nazis.

It's sad how everyone has to dwell on this "nazi" bullshit and nobody is actually talking about the music... Wagner was a great composer who had a style all his own, and he was immensely influential on all types of music (especially American film scores - if you like this piece, check out "Scene d'amour" from Vertigo, it uses a lot of the same chords)

Nietzsche you can separate for sure, he lost many friends, even had many troubles with his sister because of anti-semitism, and worse, her husbands fanatical anti-semitism. Still, don't throw out genius work as a result of moral connections. And you cannot blame either of the 2 for Nazism. To do so would be embarrassing for the accuser. Listen to R. Strauss Also Sprach Zarathusra.

He was a genius yes. But they associate him with nazis because he was a raving anti-Semite, and a staunch German nationalist. In a bad form. Wagner started before Nietzsche was active, he was already famous when nietzsche was still studying. Nietzsche was inspired by wagner, (Birth of tragedy) But this was later cast aside by Nietzsche, as he saw wagner for what he really was. (He still enjoyed Tristan though till the end) ..Continued...

inspired by nietzsche, who was inspired by aryan iranian mythology and religion. ALSO SPRACH ZARATHUSTRA who was Zarathustra? Who is Ahuramazda? What is Avesta? who was that Sassanid prince Parzifal? who were Sassanid? Where is IRAN VEJ??? search in internet, find out about the roots!

what a genius, what a treasure...how ignorant and stupid to associate him with nazis just because his theme and framework of composition was the aryan iranian mythology. people forget that he and nietzsche were before nazis and if anyone uses them for their political objectives so one can not make wagner or nietzsche responsible. for me wagner is nietzsche in music...EINMALIG

  20. Aldrick Says: January 8th, 2009 at 17:49:24

No matter who or what he was his music is a thing of gentle beauty from a time of gross vulgarity.
  21. NANTRES Says: January 8th, 2009 at 18:12:23

God, I love the Tristan chord. It gets me every time... it's like shivers.
  22. Rawls Says: January 8th, 2009 at 18:35:22

Who cares if Wagner was a proto-nazi? He's long dead, and the thing you are watching is his music, which is fantastic.
  23. SI Says: January 8th, 2009 at 18:58:21

this gives me goosebumps... great performance
  24. Sara Says: January 8th, 2009 at 19:21:20

could you stop arguing about wagner most of those people who posted a coment have no idea what the hell was going on and i thin it´s disrespectfull to someone like wagner to even think about calling him a nazi or even the forefather of the nazis wtf!!!
  25. Annora Says: January 8th, 2009 at 19:44:19

The Nazis used everything they thought that would help them to transport their message. Even middel high german texts which were written in a time when even no Germany existed. So...
